The Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS), or simply the Loyal Legion is a United States patriotic order organized on April 15, 1865, by three veteran officers of the U. S. Army. The original membership was composed of commissioned officers of the Army, U. S. Navy, or U. S. Marine Corps who served during the American Civil War, or who had served and thereafter been commissioned and who thereby "had aided in maintaining the honor, integrity, and supremacy of the national movement" during the Civil War It is the third-oldest hereditary military society in the United States after the Society of the Cincinnati, instituted in 1783, and the Aztec Club of 1847. The mission of MOLLUS is to foster patriotism.
MOLLUS is a nonprofit organization. There are three basic categories of membership: Hereditary, Associate (non-hereditary), and Honorary. Many current Companions of the Order are also members of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW), the legal heir to the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR).
The Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States currently operates in several Commanderies throughout the United States, with a local Commandery in Kansas.
The annual due are nominal, $12 per year. In many cases, the first year dues may be waived if for any reason a financial hardship is shown.
Meetings are determined by the commandery. Meetings are scheduled three (3) times a year at the convenience of the members. In many instances the meetings are held by ZOOM. As the organization grows, future social functions will be scheduled which will take place throughout Kansas.
